Allowable Concentration Of Vinyl Chloride In A Chemical's Plant Atmosphere

Vinyl Chloride

The concentration of vinyl chloride (C2H3Cl) allowed in the atmosphere in a chemical plant is 2.0 x 10-6 g/L.
(a) Express the concentration in moles/Liter
(b) Express the concentration in molecules/Liter.

The strings: S7P1A15 (containership - mass).

The math:
Pj Problem of Interest is of type containership (mas).

Vinyl Chloride

(a)The molar mass of a substance (the mass of 1 mole) equals the formula weight of the substance expressed in grams.
Formula weight of vinyl chloride (C2H3Cl) = 24 + 3 + 35.45 = 62.45 g
So, 2.0 x 10-6 g = (2.0 x 10-6)/62.45 moles = 3.2 x 10-8 moles
So, concentration of vinyl chloride in moles = 3.2 x 10-8 moles/L.

(b) 1 mole of a substance contains the Avogadro's number of molecules = 6.02 x 1023.
So, 3.2 x 10-8 moles contains:
(3.2 x 10-8)(6.02 x 1023) molecules = 1.9 x 1016 molecules.
So, concentration vinyl chloride in molecules = 1.9 x 1016 molecules/L.
